I’ve had the pleasure and honor of photographing this family for all three maternity sessions, and all three of their newborn sessions (once baby #3 comes). My most favorite part about this family is the genuine love they have for each other. It isn’t often that you meet people that show their love like this couple. It’s so simple and pure, and you can tell just by spending a little time with them.

These are taken only 3 weeks before mama’s due date! She looks AMAZING! Enjoy!

I can’t help it. This kid keeps me laughing every day, but taking pictures of him, is quite hard for this mama photographer! Why are our kids always the toughest crowd?! The only way to get this kid to look at me or get much attention at all is to bring his daddy along. Maybe his baby sister will be more cooperative:)13ish weeks to go! (A little peak at the pregnant belly at 26 weeks!)

I promised more photography tips, and here are my next two.

Photography Tip #1 – Catch every expression! Never think the only one you’ll love will be a smile looking at the camera kind of picture (though, maybe get one for grandma, ha!). It’s about capturing personality, and who they are at that moment. Mine happens to be very much like his daddy–always looking for a laugh so I get LOTS of silly faces, and expression. Never a dull moment! ha! Also, no, I didn’t photoshop out the fading tattoo on his arm, because he almost always has a tattoo on his arm. It’s just kinda him right now!:)

Photography Tip #2 – Cloudy days are great days to play with your camera in manual mode. Because the light is typically pretty even, you’ll be able to play with your aperture and shutter speeds to see how they work, and how they look best with your pictures depending on the kind of picture you’re going for. With even lighting, you’ll have less need to change settings for the best exposure. (Think cloudy weather or even full shade!) For example, if you want a close up picture, you’ll notice an aperture at your lowest setting (maybe 3.5 or lower depending on your lens’s capability) will give you a more blurred background (more bokeh in photography terms!), but you may want a larger aperture if you’re looking to capture your subject and the beauty of the background. (Remember, with a lower aperture, you’ll have less in focus (smaller depth of field) so make sure you’re focusing on exactly what you want or might have hair in focus and eyes out of focus! More on depth of field and aperture and shutter speeds later.)

You’ll also notice how even in places where you don’t think there are shadows, there will be slight shadows on the face or fun light to pick up that will change your photo slightly. Notice how when my son turns his face, it gives different shadows or lights up his face.

Be patient with yourself, and train your eye to see the differences in light even in what seems like “even lighting”. Most importantly have fun, and remember to adjust as you learn! Here’s the rest from our shoot. Enjoy!

They will be welcoming their baby girl in about 8 weeks. Doesn’t mom look amazing?! I had so much fun working with this family to celebrate their new little life coming, and big sister was one of my favorites. With a personality as big as the moon, she kept me laughing the whole time… and kept me moving too.:)I hope you enjoy this maternity session in the peach orchards.

I love this family. The oldest I’ve been photographing since he was about 3 months old. Following a family through the years is such a joy! This was my first mini session of the season in Ft. Mill, South Carolina. The peach trees were in bloom in the orchard, and the blossoms were just gorgeous! I also loved at the end how mom asked to get a picture of their little hands, because “you just forget how small they are!”. So true!! Hold those little hands, because they are only small for so long. Enjoy!
